New York’s public golf runs from Long Island state-park courses to Westchester daily-fee golf and multi-course Upstate resorts. This shortlist is about finding a round worth building a visit around, without treating the price as the deciding factor.
This is Break 90 Golf’s research-based editorial shortlist, using course-operator and public-agency information. It is not an official statewide ranking or a firsthand review. We select for course character, destination appeal and public access. Separate layouts at the same property may appear individually.
Rates and booking information checked October 15, 2026. All prices are USD per player unless identified as per cart. They are published references, not guaranteed quotes. Taxes, booking fees, travel, lodging and gratuities are extra unless explicitly included. Seasonal rates apply only to the dates shown; availability is weather-dependent. Where a dependable adult price could not be confirmed, we link to a live quote instead of estimating.

1. Bethpage State Park — Black Course
Farmingdale · Best for a major-championship public test
Bethpage Black is the demanding championship centerpiece of the five-course state-park complex. It is the destination choice for golfers who want the challenge and tournament history. Choose it with realistic expectations about both difficulty and the physical demands of the round.
Price: April 2026 fee sheet: $140 weekday / $160 weekend and holiday for non-New York residents; qualifying residents pay $70/$80. Add the $5 reservation fee. Black is a walking round; carts are listed only for the other four courses.
Break 90 approach: Leave the back tees alone unless they fit your game. Take a safe recovery when the alternative risks another shot from trouble.

2. Turning Stone — Atunyote
Vernon · Best for a polished resort championship round
Tom Fazio’s Atunyote uses rolling parkland, tree-lined fairways and water features. Its past PGA Tour event adds another reason to choose it as the centerpiece of a Turning Stone trip, with the other resort courses available for a longer visit.
Price: The official page lists public reference rates of $250–$275, depending on the day. Seasonal, resort-guest and rewards categories differ; request the current public quote and confirm cart and tax treatment for your date.
Break 90 approach: Choose a conservative landing area from the tee. A course with tournament history does not require you to attempt tournament-player shots.

3. Montauk Downs State Park Golf Course
Montauk · Best for a wind-influenced Long Island round
Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigned Montauk Downs with assistance from Rees Jones. Winds from the ocean and bay can make the course play differently from one day to the next. It is a good choice when the trip is about a distinctive public course rather than a private-club invitation.
Price: Nonresident green fees $95 weekday / $106 weekend; New York residents $48/$53. Reservation fee $5. A shared electric cart is listed at $22 per player.
Break 90 approach: Choose your wind-adjusted distance first, then swing within yourself. A longer club with a controlled swing can be the useful play into a breeze.

4. Turning Stone — Kaluhyat
Verona · Best for elevation and a demanding test
Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s Kaluhyat uses dramatic elevation changes and is the Turning Stone choice for golfers seeking a more demanding round. It is worth pairing with Atunyote to experience two different designs rather than replaying the same course.
Price: The official rate page includes public main-season references of $160–$175. Seasonal and other categories differ, so confirm the applicable fall or next-season quote rather than treating that range as a year-round guarantee.
Break 90 approach: Choose tees by required carry distance. When the stance or elevation complicates an approach, favor a broad safe target over a precise flag.

5. Leatherstocking Golf Course
Cooperstown · Best for a lakeside destination day
Leatherstocking at The Otesaga provides public guest access in Cooperstown, making it an attractive golf addition to a visit to the area. Its lakeside setting and separate visitor fee make it worth comparing with a full resort package.
Price: Published peak public rate $175 including cart and tax; $130 after 2 p.m. Resort-guest prices are different. Confirm the seasonal rate and enough daylight before choosing twilight.
Break 90 approach: Check the scorecard before selecting tees and spend time on the practice green. Keep the first few holes simple while you settle into the round.

6. Bethpage State Park — Red Course
Farmingdale · Best for a second Bethpage destination round
The Tillinghast-designed Red offers another reason to visit Bethpage beyond Black. It is a useful companion for golfers interested in the complex’s architecture and a public course with a separate identity.
Price: 2026 nonresident green fees $90 weekday / $100 weekend and holiday. New York residents pay $43/$48. Reservation fee and optional cart charges are additional. Use the current fee sheet rather than doubling an older resident price.
Break 90 approach: Treat Red as a separate challenge. Pick sensible tees and start with a target plan rather than comparing every hole with Black.

7. Pound Ridge Golf Club
Pound Ridge · Best for a modern Pete Dye course near New York City
This public daily-fee course in Westchester County was designed by Pete Dye with Perry Dye and Michael Langkau. It offers a modern alternative to the region’s traditional club courses, without a residency requirement for public play.
Price: Published peak rates: $175 Monday, Wednesday and Thursday; $265 Friday–Sunday/holidays before 1 p.m., falling to $190 after 1 p.m. Cart and pre-round range balls are included. The course closes Tuesdays for maintenance.
Break 90 approach: Keep a reliable recovery in your plan. Avoid turning a poor tee shot into two poor decisions by attempting a narrow escape.

8. Turning Stone — Shenendoah
Verona · Best for a third course for a multi-round stay
Shenendoah gives a Turning Stone visit a third championship-course option. It is a useful choice for a group that wants to stay in one base while playing different layouts, rather than changing hotels and driving across the state each day.
Price: The official page lists public main-season references of $160–$175. It also publishes fall and twilight categories. Obtain the exact quote for your date and check the full inclusions before comparing a day round with a package.
Break 90 approach: Save some energy for the later holes if this is part of a multi-round trip. Comfortable tees and a consistent routine help more than forcing extra distance.

9. Saratoga Spa — Championship Course
Saratoga Springs · Best for a full round in a state-park destination
The Championship Course is Saratoga Spa’s 18-hole option, separate from its shorter course. It makes this list for travelers who want a public golf day as part of a Saratoga visit, with clearly published seasonal pricing.
Price: 2026 late-season green fees, September 21 to close: $36 weekday / $43 weekend and holiday; cart $19 extra. In the peak July 3–September 7 period, visitor green fees work out to $65 weekday / $79 weekend after the listed nonresident surcharges.
Break 90 approach: Compare tees using your typical approach distances, then play for a useful next shot. Do not let a relatively modest green fee change your preparation.

10. En-Joie Golf Club
Endicott · Best for a tour-tested course at a public price
En-Joie sits beside the Susquehanna River near Binghamton and describes its course as a traditional, tour-tested layout. It is an appealing destination for golfers who want tournament connections without choosing a luxury resort.
Price: 2026 summer adult rates included $66 with cart Monday–Thursday and $88 before noon Saturday–Sunday. October 12–November 8: $52 Monday–Thursday, $58 Friday/holidays and $66 Saturday–Sunday riding.
Break 90 approach: Build the round around keeping the ball in play. A dependable tee club and straightforward approach targets are a good starting plan.

Reserve with the right category
New York residency changes some prices and reservation windows. At Bethpage, verified state residents can book seven days ahead and visitors five days ahead under the published rules. Use the official system and verify the course calendar before traveling. Read the state’s reservation instructions.
For Upstate autumn golf, ask about closing dates, frost delays and daylight. A lower late-season rate can be attractive, but it should come with a workable starting time and conditions that suit your trip.
