How to Break 90 Without Changing Your Swing

A simpler route to the 80s starts with avoiding doubles, not chasing perfect shots.

Start with the math

On a par-72 course, 89 can be 17 bogeys and one par. That is not flawless golf. It is golf without a pile of doubles and triples.

Choose a safe target

Aim for the widest part of the fairway and the middle of the green. You do not need to attack every flag.

Know when to put driver away

If trouble squeezes the landing area, a shorter club that stays in play may save more shots than an extra 30 yards.

Your next-round assignment

Track penalty strokes, three-putts, and doubles. Practice the category costing you the most.
